The foreclosed climate has worsened the health care scenario in USA. A member the Public Regulation Commission recalls the sad incident of a couple who found out that although wanting they were failing to have a second child. Tests revealed that the wife had a preexisting trouble that prevented her from easy conception. Upon finding this out the insurance company not only denied them insurance coverage but started sending them huge bills for withholding information. The couple found themselves facing foreclosure – all because of an unknown preexisting condition.

This sort of an attitude does not tune in with the traditions of a great country like America. It is as if the health insurance companies are looking about not to help but to put people in trouble. Instances like the one narrated above have become all too common. New Mexicans are the most vulnerable. They fail to get health coverage because of complicated technicalities and initial expenses related to doctor’s visits and investigations. With each passing day the situation is worsening.

There are also many instances of insurance companies refusing to pay bills despite coverage. The situation cannot improve unless a fundamental change is brought about in the health care infrastructure.

From 2000 the health care premiums have doubled but wages have increased by only 3%. The average family pays an additional $1,100 as premium each year to make up for those who are not insured. Under the present system the expenses of health care services for the average household is set to increase by $1,800 per year. This means less money for essentials like groceries, education and mortgages.

Thus those covered by health insurance have to endure higher expenses with less surety. All it needs is a job loss, illness or an accident to be removed from the covering altogether. This puts food and shelter priorities at a greater risk than before.

The game of opposing reforms in health care has been going on for decades. The vested interests have put in all their might and influence to prevent any change in the health sector. But the perhaps the policy makers have realized that this cannot continue any longer.

Insurance has to be made accessible and also affordable to a cross section of families – especially at a time when the ordinary American is battling the effects of recession. One should not be denied coverage if a condition preexists, if one suffers from chronic ailments or if one loses a job. All these should be taken into consideration. After all the aim is to help the people and not squeeze them.
